"Fear not, I am with you!"
A message from Fr. John Phalen, CSC - president of Holy Cross Family Ministries
Visiting with family and friends can be an important part of our spirituality. Taking the time to share our thoughts, our experiences and even ourselves with loved ones is another way of serving Jesus and His mother, Mary. By talking with others in a heartfelt manner, we are inspiring them to live in faith and charity.
This year, the theme of the Try Prayer! It Works! Contest is “Fear not, I am with you!” The Second Joyful Mystery gives us the lesson of The Visitation, where Mary visits Elizabeth after the angel Gabriel tells her of God’s plan. During the visit, Mary comforts her cousin and helps her as she awaits the birth of her child.
How do you visit with people? Why do you visit them? Whom do you visit? Do you see Christ in others – like Mary and Elizabeth when they visited with each other?
The lesson of The Visitation helps us understand the importance of friendship. Visiting with others is an opportunity to share God’s love and to offer ourselves in charity and service to our neighbors when necessary. When we do so, we know we can count on Jesus to be there: “Fear not, I am with you!”
Let Mary inspire your creativity in the form of artwork, a poem or an essay to show how you feel the presence of Christ when you visit with others. Good luck and God Bless!
