“Jesus replied: The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12: 29-31
Holy God of Love, love of neighbor, grounded in love for you, is first and foremost a responsibility for each individual member of the faithful but it is also a responsibility for the entire Church community at every level… From the very beginning, the exercise of charity became established as one of the essential activities of the Church along with the administration of the sacraments and the proclamation of the word; love for widows and orphans, prisoners, and the sick and needy of every kind is as essential to her as is the ministry of the sacraments and the preaching of the Gospel. The Church cannot neglect the service of charity anymore than she can neglect the Sacraments and the Word. {Deus Caritas Est} Lord, help me to love you and my neighbor this Lent. Amen.
