Encourage Prayer At Home

Prayer At HomeEncourage your family to set aside time each day to pray and choose a time that will work best for everyone. If your family members are in many different parts of the country, you can still find a time that you can pray together, even though you are not in the same room, and know that everyone is together in spirit.

Create a sacred space in your home...you are clearing away any distractions that will get in the way of prayer.

  • Place a small container with Rosary Beads in the family room or wherever your family gathers most often. (Ask us for a Free Rosary)

  • Clear away any toys

  • Have a family member light a candle

  • Turn off cell phones, TV, computers and IPods

  • Place an image of the crucifix, Jesus, Mary, or similar.

Apostles Creed Start small...a simple prayer, perhaps the first bead of the Rosary, the Apostles Creed (video). Pray as a family.

The important thing is to begin...once you start, your family will come to cherish this quiet time for prayer.

Once the daily time is set aside and routine established...add in some time for sharing thoughts.

  • Each family member can share their thoughts and concerns before beginning the Rosary prayer. Go around the room.
  • You can relate your own concerns to one of the Mysteries of the Rosary. How do you live that particular mystery of the Rosary in your own life?  For Example:  Carrying of the Cross – How do you carry your cross or how do you help others carry their cross.
  • Encourage your child to mention his or her intentions such as praying for a family member who is sick, for safety at school, for help with a test.   Intentions may also be specific during different seasons of the Liturgical year. For example: Lent - Forgiveness or Advent - Patience
  • Read scripture passage before each decade and mention an intention (have someone read a scripture passage and intention for each of the Mysteries.)
