REFLECTION: We usually think of Easter as the shining forth of Christ’s glory to his followers. But if we take a closer look at the Scriptures that describe his various appearances after the resurrection, we will find their coming to believe was a gradual process. If we look only to the blaze of resurrection, we can miss the quiet bits of risen life that come to warm, encourage and to cheer.
PRAYER: God, our Father, you give us the joy of recalling the rising of Christ to new life. May the joy of our Easter celebration reflect itself in all that we say and do. Amen.
FAMILY DISCUSSION/ACTIVITY:
Monday: Easter Monday has long been a day to take a spring walk, sometimes called an “Emmaus
Walk.” This was named for the walk Jesus took with the disciples after the resurrection. Take a walk with someone today.
Tuesday: Easter is indeed the greatest of all Christian feasts, so important that 50 days are needed to do it justice. Pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary (click here for video) today with the family. Remember there are 50 Hail Mary’s in the rosary. Pray them for peace.
Wednesday: Another name for Easter Week is White Week. This comes from the white garments worn by the newly baptized. At the family meal today, bring out any baptismal clothing to display, also a bowl of clear water on the table that everyone can use to bless themselves.
Thursday: The early Christians sold what they had and shared according to each one’s needs. Review today how you share what you have with those in need.
Friday: Reflect today on the world situation of war and peace. Jesus still rises from the dead through us, through our daily rising out of doubt, despair, resentment, and hopelessness.
Saturday: Discuss with the family at the dinner table how Easter’s secular side reflects its religious foundations, i.e., flowers, springtime, finery, eggs.
PRAYER: Rejoice, heavenly powers! Sing, choirs of Angels! Exult, all creation around God’s throne! Jesus Christ, our King, is risen! Sound the trumpet of Salvation! Amen.
