Wonder Counselor
Have you ever had a counselor, mentor or coach who was exceptionally gifted in what they did? Perhaps he or she knew and understood you so much better than others. Possibly he or she clarified your situation for you so it became easier for you to decide what move to make. And certainly your counselor, mentor or coach inspired you and helped you boost your self confidence.
This is the Season of the birth of the “Wonder Counselor” and “Prince of Peace!” Jesus is the one who is exceptionally gifted as a leader. He knows and understands us so well because he chose to become one of us. He lets his disciples choose how to react to his statements. “Will you too leave me?” he asks. Peter cries, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of everlasting life!”
Of course, Jesus is so much more than a counselor. But his words and actions do inspire. He teaches us to call God our Father; to forgive as we are forgiven; to love without seeking a reward. Christ sacrifices himself completely for humanity and invites us to like service.
But how is he a “Wonder Counselor”? Well, unlike other counselors, he lives all that he advises others. Basically, he invites us to conform our lives to his. He serves as the model for how our Father-God would have us behave toward one another in peace, justice and love.
And all this Jesus does while accepting a very humble position in the world. He is born in a stable in an out-of-the-way town to unknown people. He critiques the powerful religious leaders of his day for their pride and willingness to lay great burdens upon others without lifting a finger to help them.
Perhaps the most important characteristic of any counselor is the ability to listen well with comprehension and respond with wisdom. Jesus hears our prayer and responds through the Holy Spirit.
When you don’t know which way to turn in life, go not to just any counselor. Go to the Savior, the Messiah, the Prince of Peace, the Wonder Counselor! Your life will change in wonderful ways! He’ll cause you to wonder like a child at the beauty of the world and the human integrity of Mary, Our Mother, all God’s people, and the Wonder Counselor himself!
