A message from Father John Phalen, CSC
The family that prays together stays together
How beautiful an expression that is! And how perfect it is for the theme of the 2010 Try Prayer! It Works! Contest. Our founder, Servant of God Father Patrick Peyton, CSC, first said, "The family that prays together stays together" more than 60 years ago. And it's still true today!
Father Peyton (1909-1992) believed in families and encouraged them to pray the Rosary daily. He understood that faith is important in helping brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers to grow together and remain strong in this modern world that is so often confusing and frightening.
Father Peyton was an amazing person. Born in poverty in Ireland, he came to America and grew to fame as an influential spiritual leader. He produced movies, directed radio programs with Hollywood stars and preached to millions of people worldwide – all about the sanctity of the family and the importance of prayer. This unshakable belief came from his love of Jesus and Mary and from his own childhood memories of praying the Rosary each day with his family.
So this year, for the 100th anniversary of Father Peyton’s birth, we are excited to honor his memory and continue his mission. We have the family that prays together stays together as the theme of the Try Prayer! It Works! Contest. How does your family pray together? What do you pray for? How often do you pray together? Do you pray the Rosary as a family? If so, how does that strengthen your family? Please use your creativity in the form of artwork, a poem or an essay to show us the ways that you and your family seek divine guidance from Jesus and Mary.
Prayer is such an important part of lives. It helps us to understand God’s will and brings us together in a community of faith. Please send us your entry depicting your thoughts and feelings on this important theme. Remember to pray to Father Peyton as the Church considers him for sainthood.
Sincerely in Jesus and Mary,
